Just a Nurse

Poem ‘Just a Nurse’ (extended version for #GE2017)

I’m just a nurse with bills to pay
Keep my head down. Too much to say
The system is broken, but I’m just a lone voice
I’m just a nurse. I have no choice.

But I’m also a mother and a recovering patient
Cancer renewing my faith in this nation
Time to rebel and say “what the hell”
Many lies to uncover and truths to tell.

I’m just a nurse with bills to pay
My head is held high, while I have my say
The system is broken and I’m not a lone voice
I’m just a nurse, but we all have a choice

I fight for my children and every patient
To maintain the health service of this, our nation
Time to rebel and say “what the hell”
Stand up. Spread the word. Whistle blow. Tell.

READ:  You are never just "The Student"

Tell of the cutbacks and how you are budget driven
Unachievable targets. This was not Nye Bevans vision
Of patient-centred, holistic care
Time to speak out about this engineered nightmare.

We’ve watched it develop and kept our mouths shut
For fear of our professional contracts being cut
Fear of careers lost, but thats what they want you to think
As we continue to care, but watch our NHS sink.

I’m just a nurse with bills to pay
But I’m damned if I’m going to give in to May
It’s June now, so unless another U turn is made
On the NHS sell off, patients far less important than trade

Brexit means Brexit I’ve heard that somewhere before
NHS Crisis means NHS Crisis….shall I repeat it some more?
And hypnotise you into what I need you to hear
Because I’ve kept quiet year after year!

READ:  Healthcare Leader tells Nurses 'no one likes a whinger'

I’m just a nurse with bills to pay
I think they much preferred me that way
Time to expose the cancer within
Together we stand and together we win

Time to rebuild this country of ours
The solid foundations from our truths, not the liars
I’m just a nurse with bills to pay
Vote wisely my friends. Have your say.
