Second nurse in a week dies on their way home from work

She was on her way home after finishing her night shift when the accident occurred.

3 October 2019

This week two nurses have lost their lives while driving home from work.

Kerrie Browne a 26-year-old nurse working at University Hospital Kerry in Tralee died in a road traffic collision yesterday morning.

It is understood she was on her way home after finishing her night shift when the accident occurred on the N21 at Meenleitrim, Castleisland.

Ms Browne studied and trained in London and worked for Whittington Health NHS Trust before returning to Ireland to be closer to family.

Local police said the fatal road traffic collision involving a jeep and a car occurred at around 8am. They are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, particularly any motorists who were travelling in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage.

The news comes only hours after the death of another young nurse Laurie Jones from Wales.

Tributes to both the young nurses have filled social media alongside calls for health services to take urgent action to ensure there are no more deaths. One registered nurse said; “Sometimes I am so tired I don’t remember how I get home”.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
