Health Secretary fails to meet nurses to discuss pay and poor working conditions

Figures suggest that the recent 3% pay award is actually a £547 real-terms pay cut due to an increased cost of living.

Nurses wrote to Mr Javid to request the meeting at his constituency headquarters.

The Secretary of State for Health and Social care failed to meet nurses to discuss a “shambolic” 3% pay offer over the weekend.

Earlier this month, grassroots campaigning group Nurses United UK wrote to Sajid Javid requesting the meeting at his constituency headquarters.

Mr Javid failed to even respond to the request from the group.

Figures suggest that the recent 3% pay award is actually a £547 real-terms pay cut due to an increased cost of living.  This comes on top of a further £6144 real-terms pay cut over the past decade.

Compromising safe patient care.

Attending the event, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Deputy President Tracey Budding said; “On the 21st of July, Sajid Javid my MP, told the world that it was his job to make that everyone working in the NHS feels valued.

“He said that a 3% pay award for NHS workers is an increase in real-terms and he also said that nurses will, on average, be £1000 a year better off.”

Ms Budding goes on to say that the “real-terms pay cut” is compromising safe patient care due to an ever-rising pressure on staff and workforce gaps.

She goes on to call for Mr Sajid to “put money where his mouth is” in order to support the nursing profession and demands a future meeting with the Health Secretary.

Couldn’t be bothered.

Nurses United UK have accused Mr Javid of not being “bothered” to meet nurses and his own constituents.

Anthony Johnson, lead organiser for the group added; “What a surprise that Sajid Javid, whose party is funded by the private healthcare lobby, couldn’t be bothered to turn up to meet nurses, some of who were his own constituents.

“We all know nurses need a restorative pay rise to keep our patients safe. Members of the public understand this and supported us at every turn, saying that Mr Javid only turns up around election time.

“On Friday 17th September at 11:30 more nurses from his constituency will visit Mr Javid’s advice surgery and demands that he listens to us, not his donors.”
