Nurses have accused MPs of voting to “starve” vulnerable children after they voted not to offer a Free School Meals payment to low-income families during half.-term.
Labour‘s Opposition Day motion to extend free school meals through the Christmas holidays failed after Conservative MPs were told to vote against it.
The Government argues that other support, such as Universal Credit, are in place for families who facing hardship amid the pandemic this winter.
Hundreds of cafes, restaurants, and some local councils have since stepped in pledged to help feed children facing hardship.
Nurses have taken to social media to express their concern about the lack of support for families when they need it the most.
Gemma, a School Nurse from Yorkshire, told NursingNotes how important free school meals are. She said; “Allowing children to suffer is wrong – I don’t think any decent human being would argue with that.
“As a school nurse safeguarding children is my priority and privilege; ensuring ALL our children have what they need, not only to survive, but to thrive, is surely the priority of a government with society’s best interest at heart.”
“Free school meals are a lifeline to our poorest families: ensuring that at least once a day, a child has a full belly.
“Hungry children cannot learn, hungry children don’t thrive, and hungry children get sick. It is in all of our best interests to look after all of our children.
“In the 5th biggest economy in the world, for this to even be an argument is shameful.
Anthony Johnson, a health visitor and leader organiser for the grass roots group Nurses United UK responding by saying; “Our children shouldn’t starve. We are nurses, a profession which is an expression of how much humanity can achieve when it works together.
“We need to work together as a society to protect the most vulnerable and in this case removing support for hard-working families who have fallen on hard-times due to pandemic is not the right thing to do.”
“This government have earned their badge as awful human beings that refuse to listen to experts.”
