NMC appoints interim Chief Executive and Registrar

The Nursing and Midwifery Council has announced it has appointed an interim Chief Executive.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council have announced the appointment of Sue Killen as interim Chief Executive and Registrar following the resignation of Jackie Smith in May.



Ms. Killen has been the Chief Executive of St John Ambulance for the past ten years and prior to that held a range of senior roles in the civil service including as a Director General.

According to the NMC, she has extensive experience in transport, energy and the Treasury, including work on nuclear safety and transport accident investigation.

Her previous experience in healthcare includes leading an Independent Review of Palliative Care for Children and Young People for the Department of Health, as well tackling the impact of the misuse of drugs while Director of Drug Strategy at the Home Office.

Finally, Killen also acts as Vice Chair for the housing association Clarion Housing and Chair of the charity Clarion Futures.


An advert in The Times reveals the NMC is searching still searching for an “inspirational” new permanent chief executive who will bring a “fresh approach” to the way it works for an “undisclosed” salary.

The NMC notes in the advert that “there is no requirement to have experience in the health sector”.
