Ballot papers and the consultation document are to be sent by email.

The Royal College of Nursing in Northern Ireland has launched a consultative ballot to ask members if they agree to the proposed framework agreement on pay parity with England alongside new safe staffing proposals.

The ballot comes after the newly-elected health minister Robin Swann agreed to bring healthcare workers’ pay back into line with England and to take measures to improve staffing levels.

Ballot papers and associated consultation documents are to be sent by email to members in Northern Ireland who are eligible to take part and the ballot will consult members on both the restoration of pay parity and proposals on safe staffing.

A pay journey tool is available on the Department for Health website outlining the changes and allowing members to plot their individual pay journey.

The RCN has produced a consultation document jointly with other trade unions and supplementary RCN information on safe staffing.

Members must have their say.

There will also be a series of workplace consultation events to give members the opportunity to ask questions about the proposals.

The ballot will close on Friday 21 February at 12 noon.

Pat Cullen, Director of the RCN in Northern Ireland said: “It is vital that RCN members have their say on these important issues.

“I am incredibly proud of the determination and commitment shown by them which has got us to this point in our dispute.

“It was never an easy decision to take strike action but nurses and nursing assistants have truly shown their determination to ensure that patients in Northern Ireland receive the care they deserve and that staff are treated and paid equally.

“I would urge all members to read the information carefully. This is your opportunity to have your say and ensure the voice of nursing is heard.”
